The beautiful, almost androgynous Irish actor snaps on a pair of heels and some rather fetching wigs for his role as transvestite rent boy Kitten in Neil Jordan's latest film, Breakfast on Pluto.
Totty Watch couldn't give a flying leprechaun what sort of outfit the Oirish lovely prefers. With his pouting lips to make you drool and sparkling blue eyes surrounded by eyelashes that could knock you out with one flutter, he can come round to Totty Watch Towers wearing anything he damn well pleases. It wouldn't stay on for long anyway...
Name: Cillian (pronounced "Kill-ian") Murphy.
Vitals: Born 26 May 1976 in Cork, Ireland [We'd like to pop his cork that's for sure—Ed.]
Famous For: Poor little Cillian didn't have much opportunity to be a naughty leprechaun when he was a kid. His mum was a teacher, his dad was a school inspector and he attended the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, whose mission statement says, "Moral training and character formation require that an aptitude of mind and heart be developed in each student which will enable him to live an upright, Christian life in whatever circumstances he may find himself."
Not sure what they'd think about him trying to poison the residents of Gotham City in Batman Begins or acting out devilish fantasies in his forthcoming movies. With two films in the pipeline and two just out, Cillian is very much in demand at the moment and not just by legions of queens. This year Cillian is set to sizzle.
He's probably best known for being a ruthless zombie killer in 28 Days Later..., but he recently starred in Wes Craven's Red Eye as Jackson Rippner—how cool a name is that! He kidnaps the woman sitting next to him on a plane and threatens to kill her father if she doesn't help him with his dastardly assassination plot.
But it was as the fresh faced pretty boy villain in Batman Begins that he actually hit the popcorn big time. Cillian played Dr Jonathan Crane, aka The Scarecrow, a psychiatrist who experiments on his own mental patients. He's Batman's arch-nemesis, but he doesn't get the better of the Caped Crusader and ends up wearing his own straight jacket. Unfortunately it's not as tight, revealing, and sexy as his enemies' PVC outfits! Shame.
He'll also shortly be starring in Ken Loach's new film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley playing a soldier fighting for Ireland's independence from the wicked English. And he finished shooting last summer in Sunshine, where Cillian stars alongside fellow hottie Chris Fantastic Four Evans in a sci-fi drama. "He has the most extraordinary eyes," says the director Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan. "And I kept trying to invent excuses for him to take his glasses off in close-ups." Just his glasses?! How short sighted of Mr Nolan to stop with just eyewear. If Totty Watch had been directing we'd have had Cillian running around naked in every scene!
Breakfast On Pluto: Of all his films Totty Watch is most impressed by Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto, where Cillian glams himself up to play a transvestite prostitute called Patrick "Kitten" Braden. Kitten escapes his small Irish hometown and hi-tails it to London to become a cabaret singer.
Adapted from Patrick McCabe's novel, it also stars Liam Neeson as Cillian's not very nice father and Stephen Rea, from Jordan's The Crying Game (lets hope Stephen works it out quicker this time around). Cillian also gets the following immortal line: "If I wasn't a transvestite terrorist, would you marry me?"
So what did he think of the drag thing?: "I really enjoyed wearing drag. I looked at myself and saw a resemblance to my younger sister, who is very pretty" he told Film Focus.
"There's a long history in film of men dressing as women, but I wanted to have a complete blank canvas and try to invent something new. But I did think Terence Stamp was the best thing in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It's easy to fall into the trap of that campy, queeny thing, but he carried it off with such grace—there was a beautiful elegance to him.
A Load of Old Blarney: "I'm completely comfortable with nude scenes," he explains. "I wouldn't want to get my thing out in every scene, but when it makes sense, it makes sense." So why aren't there directors queuing up round the block to film Cillian in the all-together? It makes sense ALL the time as far as we're concerned.
Cillian told InStyle magazine that the three things he would want on a desert island were, "My iPod, a good book that I haven't read yet, and my guitar." All that Guinness must have gone to his pretty little head because he's forgotten to include ME!!!!!!!!!
On being constantly compared to that other Irish stud monkey Cillian says, "It's basically lazy journalism if they say I'm the new Colin Farrell."
He was short listed to play Batman himself and told SFX Magazine, "In the end, Christian (Bale) was cast, which I think was the right decision. Honestly, I never saw myself as Batman material." Gorgeous and modest to boot.
Worth Knowing: His siblings have equally unusual names. Cillian has two sisters called Sile and Orla and a brother called Padraig.
He's obsessed with Frank Zappa and was once in a Zappa inspired rock band called Sons of Mr. Greengenes. They were offered a record deal, but turned it down. A smart move because the record company went under a year later.
Availability: Cillian married his long time girlfriend Yvonne in 2004. "I am a person who has always needed companionship," he says. "I'm not very good at being alone." Silly boy. That doesn't mean you have to get married does it? And especially to a smelly girl!
