My Music (Our Favorite Stars' Favorite Records)

Автор: Victoria DeSilverio

You've seen Irish actor Cillian Murphy outrun zombies in 28 Days Later... and taunt superheroes in Batman Begins. Now see him go through his record collection!
The Album That's Great For Irish Road Trips
The Beatles: Abbey Road
The Beatles, Abbey Road (Capitol, 1969)

"My dad introduced me to the Beatles and they remind me of being a kid, driving in the car with him. We would go on holiday to West Kerry, a remote part of Ireland, and listen to this tape over and over again until it wore out. McCartney's best lyric is on this record: 'And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.' The simplicity and truthfulness of the couplet has stuck with me—it's an amazing philosophy to live your life by."

The Album That Has "Assertive Haircuts"
Kings of Leon: Aha Shake Heartbreak
Kings of Leon, Aha Shake Heartbreak (RCA, 2005)

"I love this band! Their first album was great, but this is a big step forward. They're so young and unbelievably cool—bona fide rock stars! And they've got the most assertive haircuts. I'm in love with the way he sings and the way there's so much pain in his voice. And he yodels! It's full of brilliant, out-and-out rock & roll tracks. I hate bands like Keane—diluted rock music. Rock music should be sexual and angry, and these guys have all that."

The Album That Made Me Forget "Ebony & Ivory"
Stevie Wonder: Talking Book
Stevie Wonder, Talking Book (Motown, 1972)

"When I was 19, about 10 years ago, a friend gave me a tape of this album on one side and Innervisions, the album he made a year later on the other side. At that time, I thought Wonder was only 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' and 'Ebony & Ivory', his cheesy pop songs. So these records were a complete revelation to me. I listened to them so much, to the point where I thought they were one album. That's why both of them are on my list."

The Other Album That Made Me Forget "Ebony & Ivory"
Stevie Wonder: Innervisions
Stevie Wonder, Innervisions (Motown, 1973)

"He has a new album coming out. It's just awful, the way most of the artists on my list sort of hit 1979 and were like, 'Oops! I've lost all my talent!' It's just gone. And Stevie's another example. That said, in November, I was in L.A. at this benefit at the House of Blues and he got up and did a piece with a harmonica and a gospel choir. Someone introduced me to him and it was overwhelming. I was like, 'Man your music means so much to me.' He was like, 'Yeaaah.'"

The Album That Inspired Me To Be Weird
Frank Zappa: Hot Rats
Frank Zappa, Hot Rats (Rykodisc, 1969)

"Zappa was fucking crazy and he hated hippies. He was also one of the best guitarists in the world, so underrated. My brother and I had a band—I played guitar, he played piano—and this album was so influential that we started playing Zappa-style music and changed our name to Sons of Mr. Greengenes, after a song on this record. The label Acid Jazz offered us a deal, but we never signed. What we were doing was cool for about 25 minutes."

The Album That Will Outlast Us All
Radiohead: Kid A
Radiohead, Kid A (Capitol, 2000)

"I was listening to this a lot while I was shooting a movie called How Harry Became A Tree. So it reminds me of that experience, but really I think Kid A will be thought of as a seminal record in the future because now everybody's doing bleeps and weird stuff and deconstructing it all. This immediately created a mood and there's not a weak track here. It's a concept album, I think. You never know what Thom Yorke is saying, but you want to sing along anyway."

The Album That I Wish I Could Make
The Band: The Band
The Band, The Band (Capitol, 1969)

"I discovered them through Dylan, when he went electric. If I were going to try to make music again properly, I would do it like them—no frills, no irony, just good music with great lyrics. I have always been a Beatles fanatic, but the Band are a lovely alternative to them. The Beatles were so conscious that they were pushing music forward, but the Band don't seem in any way contemporary. They transport you out of modern music. A real summertime record."

The Album That Renders Me Comatose
Jeff Buckley: Live at Sin-e
Jeff Buckley, Live at Sin-é (Legacy Edition) (Columbia, 2003)

"I love Jeff Buckley! This is music to fall asleep to, to send you to sleep feeling good. Or, if you are nervous on a plane taking off, this will calm you. It's a live album of mostly covers and him talking in between songs—just him and his guitar, showing off his voice and this God-given gift. He does a cover of Van Morrison's 'Sweet Thing' that's 10 minutes long and it makes you cry and think, 'Oh, what a fucking shame it is that he's dead.'"

The Album That Reminds Me of Dublin
Van Morrison: Saint Dominic's Preview
Van Morrison, Saint Dominic's Preview (Mercury, 1972)

"A lot of people would pick Moondance or Astral Weeks, but I think I overindulged in those albums. In 1999, I was doing the play Juno and the Paycock in Dublin, but I had a tiny part so I'd sit in the wings and listen to it on repeat. My dad introduced me to Van, too, and I'm a big, big fan. I love him because he's such a curmudgeony old bastard, yet he sings the most soulful songs. He's a living legend!"

The Album That’s Cooler Than You’ll Ever Be
The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main St.
Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St. (Virgin, 1972)

"This is pure rock, completely hedonistic—they went to the French Riviera as tax exiles, off their fucking heads, and recorded it in Keith's basement. I got to meet Jagger in Cannes last year—I had just seen Gimme Shelter, and I said, 'Hey, there's this cool footage of you jamming with Ike Turner!' And he said, 'No. That never happened.' I was trying to convince him of his own life! Then this blonde walked by and he was gone."
