Cillian Murphy is still teetering. But by all accounts he is on the brink of international stardom. At the moment, his fame rests on the shoulders of one film, Disco Pigs. It was the play of the same name which catapulted the young actor to international prominence, as sell out tours conquered the U.K. and Europe, and the young Corkman has been credited with virtually creating the character of Pig in the original Corcadorca production. "All his sensibilities are correct for the part," explained writer Enda Walsh in one interview. In the three years since he first played Pig on stage, Murphy has gained experience in several movies—of which his portrayal of a cheeky, irresponsible Irishman in the U.S. for the summer in Sunburn was particularly well-received—and continued his work in theatre with Garry Hynes, it is Disco Pigs that holds the prospect of the big time. With a cast that includes rising star Elaine Cassidy, and a young director with the surname Sheridan, the feeling abroad is that things can hardly go wrong.
